I'll Bet you didn't know Carahrtt was a movie star.  In fact Carhartt has starred in many movies including co-staring in “Brothers” with Tobey Maguire and Jake Gyllenhaal

In my opinion Carhartt’s breakout role was in the 1993 flick “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape” Starring Johnny Depp.  Carhartt was really able to get out of the typecasting and into a role in which it really felt comfrotable leading to a really stunning perfomrance.

Since then Carhartt has landed many acting jobs including supporting roles in “Armageddon”, “Into the Wild” and “Jurassic Park”, where Carhartt was robbed of an Oscar nomination.

Carhartt has also stolen the screen in many primetime television spots as well.  You can see Carhartt front and center on the hit series “The Deadliest Catch” as well as a cameo in “Desperate Housewives.”

The latest 2010 boot series from LaCrosse are not just tough, but extreme. Centered on armor, fortress, fortitude, G&L Clothing is carrying both plain and steel toe versions of the Extreme Tough Wellington Work Boot and the Extreme Tough Lace-Up Work Boot. Here is a little information on what deems these boots “Extreme Tough”.

Both styles are constructed with the toughest full grain leather, along with an armor of abrasion and chemical resistance to oil, gas and barnyard chemicals. At G&L Clothing we understand that the work environment can be messy and when you are limited to a certain number of washings for your high vis garment you can never be to careful. Just in case spills or messes occur, we decided to run a little test on a few of our high visibility items. We chose a Class 3 LaCrosse jacket as well as both safety green and orange color enhanced T-shirts for our experiment. The jacket has reflective taping which is very important when staying visible on the job. The T-shirts do not have reflective taping, but it is still a nice example of removing stains from color enhanced fabric.

I was lucky enough to set up this experiment and I used a variety of different items to create stains on these three garments. From food to mud, grease, and oil, here is the complete list of products that “ended up” on our high visibility apparel.

I chose four different store bought stain removers just from word of mouth and curiosity plus tried household remedies on each stain. Because of the color enhanced nature of these garments and reflective taping, bleach is not option.  These are the stain removers I used:

Most stains were treated within a 10-15 min timeframe of when the stain was applied. Because the jacket was waterproof, it prevented a majority of the stains from soaking in completely but still had staining. It was a little messy at times, but these were the findings for our stain removal experiment.

   High Vis w/ stains

Chocolate, Jelly/Raspberry preserves, Ketchup, Mustard: Tide® to Go removed a majority of the stain immediately, Shout® gel did the same, Spray N’ Wash® and Oxiclean® sat for 1-5 mins to soak in. After washing, this stain was completely removed for all of them, so fear no food when it comes to high vis and color enhanced clothing.

Grass: Tide® to Go removed most of the stain but left a bit behind, Shout® gel left behind the darker stains, I let the Spray N’ Wash® and Oxiclean® sit on the stain. There were a few home remedies that I tried on the grass stain, vinegar and wetting the stain then applying sugar for an hour. The chemical stain removers worked well; there was barely a trace of the grass stain. Unfortunately the home remedies did not fair as well and the sugar was a big mess.

Mud: Tide® to Go took out most of the stain and left the spot a little dingy. Shout® gel removed most of the stain as well. Spray N’ Wash® and Oxiclean® soaked in the stain before washing. After washing the stain was gone; another winner for the stain removers.

Motor oil: First off this was a very messy stain and the results were not good. The Tide® to Go didn’t work to remove the stain. I let the Shout® gel, Spray N’ Wash® and Oxiclean® set in the stain for a bit. After washing, the stain remained, none of the removers worked. Working in the field and encountering oil stains is probably a lot more common than the food stains above so I was disappointed with the results.

Grease: Another tough stain, this one came from running the coat under an old truck. As with the motor oil, none of the pre-washing treatments came close to removing even a portion of the stain. The results were the same after washing; the grease stain was just as prominent as before. The whole purpose of this stain removal test was to try and removed the toughest stains like grease and oil, looks like a second experiment will need to be done to try and eliminate these stains.

Ink and Marker: I wanted to test these two stains on the cotton, color enhanced fabric and reflective taping. I have heard lots of different household items to remove ink stains so I gave it a shot; I used hairspray, nail polish remover, rubbing alcohol, toothpaste, vinegar and dish soap along with the chemical stain removers. The products that worked the best on the ink stains were hairspray and nail polish remover, the toothpaste worked pretty well too. The marker didn't come out as well. I was very surprised with the results. And a quick tip, DO NOT use the rubbing alcohol, the stain will grow in size and bled all over. It could be a good art project but not a stain removal tactic.

All in all, the chemical stain removers, Shout® gel, Spray N’ Wash® and Oxiclean® worked well and performed at the same stain removing level. I liked the Tide® to Go because it is a handy little item you can keep in your glove box to help remove stains while on the job. Using these stain removers the High Visibility quality still remained with no discoloration. The household remedies worked the best at removing ink and marker stains. Our oil and grease stains will need a lot more work, so be on the look out for part 2 of the stain remover blog.

For years Dockers has been part of the Levi's brand providing a plethera of pants and shirts for both men and women. At G&L Clothing we provide our customers with men's dress pants and shorts; and after helping a customer differentiate between the four fits that Dockers provides, I thought it would be nice to share the knowledge so when a Dockers pant style catches your eye, you will be able to find the perfect fit. You can browse our entire Dockers selection by clicking here.

Dockers Slim Fit: This is the slimmest fit that Dockers offers and is cut slim through the seat, thigh, and leg shape to fit close to the body. It sits slightly below the waist and the rise is 1/2-inch shorter rise compared to the Dockers Straight fit. The Slim Fit is cut square and straight through the hips and waist. This very modern fit is finished off with a leg opening of 18-inches.

Dockers Straight Fit: This is the straightest fit from Dockers, it sits slightly below the waist with a rise that is 1/2-inch longer than the Dockers Slim Fit and 1-inch shorter than the Dockers Classic Fit. It's cut square through the hips and waist and also offers a more generous fit of about an inch through the seat and thigh when compared to the Dockers

Slim Fit.Definitely a fit that is not too loose, not too tight, a great straight fit that is finished with a leg opening of 18 1/4-inches.

Dockers Classic Fit: This is Dockers most popular fit, it sits at the waist and has a 1-inch longer rise than the Straight Fit. It is eased through the seat, hips and thigh giving it about 1 1/2-inch more room than the Straight Fit. The slightly tapered leg is finished with a 19-inch leg opening.

Dockers Relaxed Fit: Known as Dockers most generous fit, the Relaxed Fit is cut fuller in the seat, hips, and thigh for extra comfort. Sitting slightly below the waist, this fit has a 1-inch longer rise than the Dockers Straight Fit and the tapered pant leg has a leg opening of 18.5 - 20-inches.

Choosing the correct garment for the job is a necessity especially in high traffic areas; below are a few facts about Class 1 and ANSI compliant garments. This valuable information can help you decide what class is ideal for your situation or if higher ANSI rating is required. 

Class 1 garments…

-         Must be color enhanced

-         Can be equipped with reflective taping no less than 25mm in width.

And are worn by workers when…

-    traffic does not exceed 25 mph

-         there is a separation between worker and traffic.

-         An occupation permits full and undivided attention to approaching traffic

-         Work backgrounds are not complex.

These are examples of workers using Class 1 garments:

-         Parking attendants

-         Shopping cart retrievers

-         Warehouse workers in equipment traffic

-         Sidewalk maintenance workers

-         Delivery vehicle personnel

-         Crossing guard in school zones

-         Law enforcement/fire/EMS personnel

Before you make a decision on Class 1 clothing, make sure to check with your employer on the ANSI rating required for your position. A higher level of visibility may be needed if a situation or worksite changes, being safely equipped for the day is the most important thing you can do.

ANSI compliant garments, like these Gildan T-shirts...

are not ANSI class rated because they lack reflective taping. Reflective taping helps determine class rating and is usually a requirement when working in jobs involving the use of High Visibility clothing. If you like the look of these garments reflective taping can be added, bumping up the safety. When adding your own reflective taping, make sure to comply with the ANSI/ISEA 107-2004 standard.

Even though these ANSI compliant items are not class rated, they can be worn when biking, walking, or running, to make you more visible to drivers and help to increase their reaction time. When putting in extra effort to make yourself visible, never assume drivers can see you. The busy world we live in can cause many distractions to drivers; and even when using High Visibility clothing, take precautions before changing lanes, crossing the street or making a turn.

After seeing a few badly sunburned people this week from all the nice weather we are having, I felt it appropriate to talk about hats. They are an excellent way to protect you from the sun’s UV rays and prevent unpleasant and sometimes dangerous sun burns. Here are a few of the mesh back hats we have available at our store. Men’s Carhartt Work-Flex Coat and Work-Flex Pant

The Work-Flex garments are lightweight, waterproof, and wind-resistant; a perfect substitution for that heavy Carhartt coat and bib overalls you have been wearing all winter long. The fabric is 100% polyester knit with a polyurethane coating and heat sealed seams for a waterproof and wind resistant material. The coat comes equipped with a three-piece detachable hood featuring a visor and draw cord. There are reinforced double-layer elbows for added durability and large front pockets with hook-and-loop closures. The work-flex pant has snap-adjustable leg openings, adjustable inseam length with cut-off bottoms to find the perfect fit. Both the knees and seat are double reinforced and equipped with inside hook-and-loop closures pockets for knee pads. The Carhartt Work Flex Coat and Pant are highly durable and can work in both wet and dry conditions, ideal for spring when those spontaneous storms pop up.

Men’s Carhartt PVC Rain Coat and PVC Rain Bib

The PVC Rain Coat and Bib are great for rainy days because of the 50-millimeter polyester-backed PVC construction. The seams on both the coat and bibs are electronically welded to prevent leakage. The PVC Rain Coat features a three-piece detachable hood with adjustable draw cord as well as pockets with flap and hook-and-loop closures to keep out the rain. This coat also has reinforced elbows and double-front storm flaps for durability and protection when on the job. The PVC Rain Bib has permanently attached adjustable suspenders, reinforced seat, and chap-style double-fronted legs. The waist and leg openings are adjustable with snaps and the bib pocket and knee pad pockets are all on the inside for protection from the rain. While this bib has a lot of the same features as the Work-Flex coat, it is built especially for working in wet weather.

Women’s (and Men’s) Waterproof Breathable Coats, Jackets, and Waist Overall

Just because it’s raining doesn’t always mean the temperature is cool, and if you are working in warm wet weather the PVC, or Work-Flex materials can get a little toasty. Carhartt has solved this issue with the Waterproof Breathable fabric that is made from durable nylon that features a special water-repellent finish. The breathable membrane is what allows body heat to leave the garment as it keeps rain and moisture out.

The Waterproof Breathable Coat and Jacket feature an interior body lining of 100% polyester mesh with sleeves and three-piece hood lined in nylon. A finished hem with an elastic draw cord keeps out the wind and cold. The Breathable Waist Overall has chap-style double fronts with clean out bottoms and a flat front waistband with elastic back and side adjusters for an adjustable fit.

Carhartt’s J131 Duck Active jacket is the perfect combination with a durable cotton duck shell and thermal lining that is lightweight and warm. This jacket comes equipped with an attached three-piece hood and rib-knit cuffs and bottom band for a little extra warmth when you need it. Front hand warmer pockets are great for keeping those mitts warm and two inside pockets can store whatever you need when you are out and about. This jacket is a favorite among Carhartt fans.

Dickies TJ100 Panel Jacket is water resistant and water repellent, so when the rains suddenly appear as they sometimes do (at least in Iowa anyway) you will be ready to grin and bear it. This jacket is made with Vat Dyed Twill and has a lining consisting of Nylon Taffeta quilted to Polyurethane Foam for a lightweight and comfortable fit. The Dickies panel jacket sits at hip length and has front pockets that are set in the front seams for convenience. And when the time comes to wash off some of the dirt and grime you will have no worries because this jacket is industrial laundry friendly.

Carhartt coats are another great outerwear item to have whether it’s winter or spring. The C02 Sandstone Chore Coat has a longer cut and is made with Sandstone Duck which is Microsanded and garment wash; it is similar to the Firm Duck found in the J131 jacket above but the fabric is treated a bit different. The Blanket lining is blended acrylic and polyester that will keep you warm  and the corduroy top collar is equipped with snaps underneath for an optional hood. Something very important when working in this coat is mobility, which is why Carhartt had added a split back and bi-swing to this coat giving you ease in motion.
