A few FACTS about Levi Strauss & Co:

• Levi Strauss & Co. created and patented the world’s first blue jeans in 1873
• Levi Strauss was born on February 26, 1829 in Buttenheim, Bavaria.
• Jacob Davis came up with the idea of adding rivets to stress points on pants, making them strong. He proposed the idea to Levi Strauss; both men teamed up and shared the patent.
• Lot number 501 is used to designate the copper-riveted waist overalls during manufacturing and the style number still survives today.
• The riveted pants were originally called “waist overalls” and had one back pocket, a watch pocket, a cinch, suspender buttons, and a rivet in the crotch.
• Levi’s Two Horse brand leather patch was first used on the waist overalls to demonstrate the strength of the pants and reinforce Levi Strauss & Co. as the originator of patent riveted pants.
• Levi Strauss died in 1902 and his nephews take over the business

Carhartt Edlin Active Jacket (J298)

This jacket is going to be a big seller this spring I can tell.  The Carhartt Edlin Active Jacket is built on the same active jacket template that so many Carhartt lovers know so well.  It's made out of a lightweight 7 ounce canvas, is 100% cotton and machine washable (always a plus).  This jacket fit me just the same as all of the other Carhartt Active Jackets (J130, J140, J131, etc) which is one size down from what I wear in most every other brand.  This is just my personal preference but the thing that turned me off a bit on this jacket (and the reason why the next jacket was my favorite) was the banded bottom.  I'm long waisted, and since Carhartt doesn't make a Medium Tall in this jacket I found the banded bottom to be a bit of an inconvenience.  However, I actually believe the opposite to be true for the majority of Carhartt customers,  I think that banded bottom is a selling point for many customers.

Carhartt Edlin Jacket (J299)

My favorite of the new Carhartt jackets.  You're looking at the same 7 oz canvas as the Edlin Active Jacket and really only a few minor changes that separate the two.  You can see pretty clearly the biggest difference is no hood on the Edlin Jacket,  I think this makes the jacket a bit more stylish but less functional that it's active jacket counterpart.  The things I love about this jacket are 1) The open bottom as mentioned before.  2) Hook and Loop adjustable Cuffs and 3) adjustable waistband.  I originally thought I was going to have to go a size up in this jacket being that it's built on a newer jacket platform, but like the Edlin Active Jacket it fit true to my "Carhartt Size".  

The Danner Insigator GTX with 200 gram Thinsulate insulation and Gore-Tex lining is the perfect boot for year round wear.  Don't let the 200 grams of insulation scare you away from it.  It'll be perfect in the winter with a nice wool sock and breathable enough to wear throughout the summer.  This boot is only available at this price while supplies last so make sure you take advantage!

The construction of these boots is genius; Muck uses their exclusive self-insulating, waterproof CR-foam construction that acts as a "neutral medium" between inside and outside temperatures. Depending on which style you choose, the comfort range starts at sub-zero temps all the way to 70° F, so in some regions you could wear this boot most of the year. The CR-foam bootie is naturally lightweight and comfortable so leave those heavy winter boots at home. The Muck Boots also have a Breathable Airmesh lining to allow for air circulation and wick away excess moisture.

After your outside work is finished, the Muck Boots are easy to clean with the spray of a hose or a nice scrubbing with soap and water. And if for some reason the rubber becomes punctured, it can easily be repaired with sealant found in your local hardware store.

All in all these boots are a comfortable way to work (or play) in messy outdoor conditions. The price may result in a bit of sticker shock but with easy clean-up and repair; the Muck Boots are easy to maintain to ensure they stay in your footwear collection for years to come.

1. Layers -  I'm a firm believer if you have the right clothing, winter is not so bad. If you're going from your car to work or in and out of buildings all day a layering system is key. I start with a long sleeve shirt or sweater, then my Carhartt for Women Midweight Zip Front Hooded Sweatshirt (I never leave home without it) and Carhartt has a wide variety for men and women. It keeps me warm when I'm at my desk and I can take it off if I get too warm. When I do go outside I just add my winter coat on top & I'm ready to go. And if I'm outside for longer periods of time, I will add Indera or Minus 33 thermal tops & bottoms as well as a lined vest.

2. Accessories - Hat, gloves, scarf and wool socks are pretty much part of my every day winter wardrobe. Carhartt has quite a few hats for men and women, mine is fleece lined so it's not itchy and extra warm. If you don't want to ruin your hair in the morning ear muffs, ear warmers and headbands work well too. My gloves are insulated and waterproof from Berne apparel; we don't have these online but they are available in the store. Wigwam wool socks are my favorite, the wool blend wicks moisture so they keep my feet warm (not sweaty) and anti-microbial properties keep my boots smelling fresh too. Finally never underestimate the power of the scarf to keep out the breeze; Carhartt just added a few scarves for men and women.

3. Footwear - Insulated boots, and YakTrax. I wear my Sorel boots and if there is ice, I add my YakTrax for extra traction, after you fall once on the ice, you will never forget them again. Columbia and Sorel offer men's and women's snow boots. If you are working outdoors, LaCrosse and Carolina can get you an insulated safety work boot.

4. Carry an Emergency Pack in your car all winter long -  I am a commuter so being cold and stranded is not my idea of a good time. A really good friend of mine gave me a 1 Person Emergency Pac for Christmas and it was the best gift I received this year! There are lots of websites out there with advice on making your own emergency kit but she purchased mine from this website: http://www.emergency-pac.com/ it has everything: food, water, pocket knife, blanket, etc. etc. all wrapped up in a bright red backpack.
 

That's my advice for staying warm this winter, so bundle up, enjoy the cold and contact us if you have any questions!

Here are the details of our Return/Exchange Policy...

Returns:

If it doesn't fit, you don't like it and you don't want to mess around to exchange for something else, a refund is ideal. As long as your item is not washed or worn, has ALL original tags (cannot stress this enough) and is in NEW condition, you have 40 days to send your item back to us for a refund.

Just fill out the Return/ Exchange policy form included with your purchase and tell us what you're sending back. We will issue a refund for the cost of the item (not shipping charges) back to the payment method you used to place the order (credit card, PayPal, Amazon.com purchase etc.)

Exchanges:

Maybe you received a size to big or not a fan of the color, you have 90 days from the purchase date to decide if you want to send your item back for an exchange. Make sure before you send an item back it has not been washed or worn and has ALL original tags. Fill out the Return/Exchange policy form and tell us what items you are sending back and what items you would like to exchange.

If the item you want to exchange for is more than your original purchase we will need your credit card information again to charge the difference. On the other hand if your exchange item is less than what you originally paid we will issue a refund for the amount. As long as we have your exchange item in stock we will have it processed right away otherwise we may need to order it from the manufacturer if we are out of stock.

Return Shipment Label:

We do offer a return shipment label you can print off to send back your item for a return or an exchange. The label is FREE to print and FREE to use but if you are sending an item back for a refund and use the Return Shipment label you will receive a $5.95 restocking fee that will be taken out of the refund. The label is easy to get, just go to our UPS return service page, enter your order information, print off the label and tape it to the outside of the package.

Helpful Tips:

- We reserve the right to refuse any return or exchange so make sure garments are NOT washed or worn and are in NEW condition

- Garments must have ALL original tags (manufacturer and G&L price tag)

- Find a suitable box or bag to send your item back (re-using the original packaging is not recommended)

- Please remove any pet hair from the garment (we will love you forever if you do this!)

- Fill out return/exchange policy form and include it with the shipment

Our Carhartt Store needed a little TLC so we called our Carhartt reps and had a complete makeover to the Carhartt section.

The goal was to make it easier to move throughout our Carhartt section and find what you need. The Carhartt B160 Relaxed Fit and the Carhartt B180 Traditional Fit Straight Leg Jeans are no longer in production but have been replaced by the Carhartt B460 Relaxed Fit Straight Leg and B480 Traditional Fit Straight Leg jeans.

When we get new products in we like to have our employees try them on to see how they fit and what they like and don’t like. These two were big sellers for Carhartt so we wanted to compare the old with the new to make sure there are no surprises as you switch from one version to the next.

Levi’s® has given their Carpenter Jean a little bit of an upgrade for 2011. The new fit still sits low on the hip and is loose through the seat and thigh for lots of room to move. The biggest difference we have seen is the leg openings. The new 22077 Carpenter Jean has a 17.5” leg opening which is significantly smaller than the previous 20” seen in the original.

Levi’s® can achieve a smaller leg opening in a straight leg jean by making the new Carpenter Jean similar to the 569® fit. The 17.5” leg opening is still considered a straight leg but the loose fitting waist tapers slightly towards a smaller leg opening. The new 22077 Levi’s® Carpenter also has an extra hidden cell phone pocket on the left side.

G&L Clothing has been around since 1917 and has always been located in the downtown Des Moines area. Lou Garsh and Meyer Levine first opend G&L Clothing downtown on 10th street to sell work clothing, shoes, and boots to railroad workers, construction workers, farmers and tradesmen.

G&L Clothing later changed owners and moved to 9th and Locust until 1996. Here's are a few photos from that location.

In 1981 G&L Clothing changed owners again, this time to the Marcovis family who still own and operate the store today. If you have been to the current store you know it's not located at 9th and Locust;  a fire in 1996 destroyed that location and we're now at 1801 Ingersoll Avenue.

We didn't tackle our online presence until 1999 and in 2005 (this is my favorite part) we launched gandlclothing.com!  Now everyone can enjoy G&L Clothing even if you don't live in Iowa's beautiful capital city. We ship to places all over the world and can outfit everyone from head to toe in workwear, dress and casual clothing and footwear.

I was  looking for an extremely light weight, 100% waterproof, spring rain jacket and was excited when I saw that Carhartt had added this item to the line.  Some of the great features are the elastic Velcro cuffs, the draw cord synch around the waist, and the visor on the hood.  The jacket of course also features many of Carhartt’s rugged features including the triple stitched seams you find in all of Carhartt’s outerwear and a rip stop shell that is resistant to tearing.  There are many more great features you can read about on the product page here.

My favorite thing about this jacket is the weight.  Recently it’s been 80+ degrees and raining.  If I’m wearing a rain jacket with any sort of insulation in 80+ degree heat I’ll end up more wet from sweating than I would form the rain (gross I know).  But I don’t have that problem with the Acadia jacket it’s perfect for spring showers.

Like most Carhartt jackets and tops I wear I had to go a size down on this one.  I wear the same size that I would in any other Carhartt sweatshirt or Carhartt jacket, which is generally one size smaller than other brands.  So I would recommend keeping that in mind when deciding which size you need.  We currently carry the jacket in Cobalt Blue and Black but would consider picking up the Spinach color (My personal favorite, and the color I have) if we see enough demand for it.  Both the Spinach and Cobalt blue colors are a bit darker than they appear in the images below.
