With PBR invading Wells Fargo Arena this weekend we figured it’d be a great time to run down the 5 essential clothing items needed to make your way down for all the fun.  Don't forget we've got The Dickies Durabull fighters, Dickies Cowboys Ryan Dirteater and Skeeter Kingsolver, Wrangler Rider, and current world champion Silvano Alves, and PBR Rodeo Clown Flint Rasmussen All in the store Saturday.  See Bottom for details.

1) Wranglers

Any old Wranglers will do, but they’ve got to be Wranglers.  I personally go for the Retro Slim fit boot cut Jeans.  Enough of that cowboy cut style to keep you in the game at any bull riding event or rodeo and enough style to hit the town.

2) Jack Daniels Western Shirt

Gotta have that classic western cut shirt, and is there a better shirt than one sponsored by both Wrangler and Jack Daniels?  Maybe if it had an air brushed Chuck Norris on the back of it, but that’s about it.

3) Carhartt Western Boot Sock

A sock is often forgotten, but a great sock is worth its weight in gold.  You can have the most comfortable, worn in boots of your life but your feet won’t be happy with a scratchy worn out sock.  This lightweight Carhartt western boot sock is built with a non-binding top specifically for western boots.

4) Farm Boy ‘Mess with the Bull’ Hat

‘Mess with the Bull, you get the horns’ really has a meaning when you’re sitting there watching Bushwhacker, PBR’s #1 bull weighing in at 1500 pounds, throw around a 150 pound rider.

5) Your favorite cowboy boots

We’re going to do something a little different here and recommend a product that G&L Clothing doesn’t sell, but how can you go to a PBR event without your favorite pair of Justins or Ariats?  Your favorite cowboy boots are the final piece to this perfect PBR puzzle.

Saturday April 21st

11 am to 1 pm – Dickies cowboys and Durabullfighters

Cowboys – Ryan Dirteater (just outside the top ten in the standings) and Skeeter Kingsolver

12:30 pm to 2 pm – Wrangler cowboy Silvano Alves (currently #5 in the standings)

1 pm to 2 pm – PBR Rodeo Clown Flint Rasmussen

Columbia jackets are made specifically for the outdoors, protecting you against all the elements from snow to rain, sun and insects. We don’t carry the entire Columbia collection, but this blog will dive into the technology behind Columbia’s Omni-Shield and Omni-Tech Waterproof Breathable that we do carry.

Our Columbia Tectonic Access Softshell Jacket is lightweight, 100% polyester and features Omni-shield technology. The coated fabric resists all liquids below 170-degrees from absorbing into the yarns and staining the garment. The Softshell is still as durable and comfortable as ever and will dry 3-5 times faster than fabrics not treated with Omni-shield technology.   Columbia’s advanced Omni-shield technology doesn’t hold water like normal fabrics so it’s lightweight even when wet. All in all this technology repels liquids and is perfect for your outdoor adventure without weighing you down.

Another brilliant Columbia advancement is Omni-Tech Waterproof Breathable technology. Our Columbia Rain Tech™ II Jacket has the microporus membranes that keep water from penetrating the fabric yet allow perspiration to escape, leaving your dry and comfortable all day long. Three layers make up Omni-Tech Waterproof Breathable technology. The outer layer is actually the Omni-Shield we talked about earlier; it prevents most water from ever making contact with the inner layers. Next a microporous membrane blocks the passage of water molecules into the fabric and still allows moisture vapors to escape. Finally a lining material protects the inner membrane and adds wicking properties for a waterproof and breathable garment. And as Columbia says “Waterproof. Breathable. Guaranteed.”

Summer is approaching quickly and if you are in need of a casual and comfortable short, look no further than the Lord Daniel Full Elastic Waist Short.

The Denim Full Elastic Short is made of 100% cotton denim and the twill version is made with 60% cotton, 40% polyester; both are durable and machine washable. A zipper front with button closure and belt loops around the waist ensures a snug and secure fit wear after wear. Storage is also essential for fun in the sun so Lord Daniel has added two front pockets as well as a back left pocket with flap and button closure and a back right welt pocket.
The Full Elastic Twill Short price ranges from $28 for regular sizes (Med – XL) up to $40 for size 7XL. The Full Elastic Denim Short is a little higher in price starting at $30 for regular sizes and ending at $42 for size 7XL. Available in Denim, Navy, Black and Khaki, the Lord Daniel prices are comparable to our other brands of shorts, but the full elastic waist is an added bonus that can be difficult to find on a quality short.

Lord Daniel also makes Full Elastic Denim Pants and Full Elastic Twill Pants for the colder months. See all of our men's shorts and let us know if you have any questions.

At least in Iowa, Mother Nature certainly can't make up her mind as to what season it should be.  We'll hit the 60s on Wednesday and it'll be snowing on Saturday (wish it would be the other way around).  Don't worry though, Spring should be here for good shortly.  You know what that means?  Means you need to pick yourself up a new spring jacket.  To be honest I've never been much of a spring jacket kind of guy.  I'd much rather throw on my thermal lined sweatshirt (coincidentally what I'm wearing as I type this) and wear that all day than sport a lightweight jacket.  Of Course that's before Carhartt starting coming out with these new jackets.  As I've mentioned before in this blog I recently found my favorite Carhartt item in the Acadia Jacket, well I think this new crop of Jackets might surpass that.

Carhartt Edlin Active Jacket (J298)

This jacket is going to be a big seller this spring I can tell.  The Carhartt Edlin Active Jacket is built on the same active jacket template that so many Carhartt lovers know so well.  It's made out of a lightweight 7 ounce canvas, is 100% cotton and machine washable (always a plus).  This jacket fit me just the same as all of the other Carhartt Active Jackets (J130, J140, J131, etc) which is one size down from what I wear in most every other brand.  This is just my personal preference but the thing that turned me off a bit on this jacket (and the reason why the next jacket was my favorite) was the banded bottom.  I'm long waisted, and since Carhartt doesn't make a Medium Tall in this jacket I found the banded bottom to be a bit of an inconvenience.  However, I actually believe the opposite to be true for the majority of Carhartt customers,  I think that banded bottom is a selling point for many customers.

Carhartt Edlin Jacket (J299)

My favorite of the new Carhartt jackets.  You're looking at the same 7 oz canvas as the Edlin Active Jacket and really only a few minor changes that separate the two.  You can see pretty clearly the biggest difference is no hood on the Edlin Jacket,  I think this makes the jacket a bit more stylish but less functional that it's active jacket counterpart.  The things I love about this jacket are 1) The open bottom as mentioned before.  2) Hook and Loop adjustable Cuffs and 3) adjustable waistband.  I originally thought I was going to have to go a size up in this jacket being that it's built on a newer jacket platform, but like the Edlin Active Jacket it fit true to my "Carhartt Size".

Danner has always been one of the most well respected footwear manufacturers due to their incredible craftsmanship and rugged boots.  That expertise and innovation however comes at a steep price....until now.  If you wear Danner boots you know that getting a pair for under $100 is an absolute steal.  It's hard to beleive that these are first quality merchandise at this price, BUT THEY ARE!

The Danner Insigator GTX with 200 gram Thinsulate insulation and Gore-Tex lining is the perfect boot for year round wear.  Don't let the 200 grams of insulation scare you away from it.  It'll be perfect in the winter with a nice wool sock and breathable enough to wear throughout the summer.  This boot is only available at this price while supplies last so make sure you take advantage!

And for your own knowledge, here is a bit of history on Minus 33 from their website...

"Minus 33 started as part of L.W. Packard a well established wool fabric manufacturing company and has been in business since 1916, with headquarters located in New Hampshire. Wool manufacturing engineers at L.W. Packard were looking for high quality, warm, and comfortable garments for outdoor activities. There was a gap from what was available, expensive high end poorly made, to low cost inferior constructed synthetic garments. Minus33 was started to fill that gap with quality products in the market and moved manufacturing to Asia to compete in a global economy.

New Hampshire, being home to some of the worlds worst weather, has been the playground and testing field for Minus33. We have found that nature has given mankind the best fiber in the world (Merino Wool) to equip avid outdoor athletes to even couch surfers."

If you knew about Minus 33 before or are just hearing about them, visit our Minus 33 Page and see what they have to offer, I promise you won't be disappointed.

The Carhartt B160 Relaxed Fit and the Carhartt B180 Traditional Fit Straight Leg Jeans are no longer in production but have been replaced by the Carhartt B460 Relaxed Fit Straight Leg and B480 Traditional Fit Straight Leg jeans.

When we get new products in we like to have our employees try them on to see how they fit and what they like and don’t like. These two were big sellers for Carhartt so we wanted to compare the old with the new to make sure there are no surprises as you switch from one version to the next.

Carhartt B460 Relaxed Fit - Straight Leg

The B460 replaces the B160 as the Relaxed Fit Straight Leg Jean. Both styles are made with the same 15 oz. cotton denim and sit at the natural waist. We did find the leg openings were a little bigger and the pockets in front were much wider, making it easier to access than the B160. The new B460 seems a bit more relaxed in the seat and thigh than the older B160 style, fitting more like the new B320 but with a longer rise.

Carhartt B480 Traditional Fit - Straight Leg

The B480 replaces the B180 Traditional Fit Straight Leg Jean. These two are both made with the same 15 oz. 100% cotton denim and sit slightly below the natural waist. The front pockets on the new B480 are wider and easier to access than the B180 version. There was no mention of noticeable wider leg openings but the B480 seems to have a slightly lower rise than the original B180 but not by much.

These are just a few little differences we noticed in transitioning from old to new. If you have anything you would like to add you can send us an Email info@gandlclothing.com or post a product review.
